The victim, identified as Lauren O'Neill, was near a private pier located in Elizabeth Bay when she was attacked by the animal that bit her right leg.

After a deadly bull shark attack, the woman climbed the stairs to the pier platform and asked for help. People nearby ran towards the victim whose leg was completely "torn" by the aquatic animal's sharp teeth.

Among the people who helped the woman was a doctor, who promptly applied a tourniquet to stop the bleeding.

O'Neill was taken by rescue helicopter to St Vincent's Hospital where she remains in a stable condition, the hospital said.

Witnesses reported to authorities that Lauren O'Neill swam around some boats that were close to shore outside a private pool attached to an apartment complex.
