Hospital records more than 50 cases of abandonment of newborn bodies in Angola

In just two months, a hospital located in the Province of Bié, central region of Angola, recorded more than 50 cases of abandonment of newborn bodies, according to information released by National Radio, the African country's public broadcaster.
The management of the Dr. Walter Strangway Hospital, located in the city of Kuito, capital of the Province of Bié, reported to journalist Julina Mango, that in the months of December 2023 and January 2024, 52 cases of abandonment of bodies of newborns were recorded. born in the nursing home.
Health authorities and the hospital's administrative team are concerned about the high level of abandonment of dead bodies. "After birth and death, the newborn's body is left at the hospital," said a representative of the hospital unit, who also stated that the bodies are sent for funerals, without the consent of the parents or family.
Families leave the bodies under the care of the hospital, claiming they are unable to hold the funeral.
The corpses of newborns sent for funerals through health agencies included 22 female bodies and 30 male bodies, totaling 52 bodies sent to the cemetery, with urns provided by the Municipal Administration.
The number of abandoned bodies is even greater, if you add another 13 bodies, however, of adults, aged between 15 and 63, the number jumps to 65 dead. The bodies, 11 male and two female, abandoned by their families, occupied spaces in the hospital unit.
